This month we interviewed Phil Birch, a highly engaged member of TheConsultantHub.com to discuss his successes as a member. He has completed his profile, engaged with our free CPD online training, attended an event, joined our development programme and landed himself a consultancy contract - all since becoming a member in January. Wondering how he has done it? Read on to find out.
Phil originally started his career in Leisure Management, working for various leisure companies and public sector sports centres in the UK. Following the turn of the millennium, he felt that the sector lacked scope for roles in Area Management and instead opted for a career in the prison service. Due to issues with arthritis Phil made the unforeseen move to become self-employed and retire from the prison service having spent over 10 years in the sector.
During his time in full-time employment, Phil accumulated a wealth of experience in operational improvement, business transformation and security management. He felt that he could put this valuable knowledge and expertise to good use to support SMEs, new start-ups, public sector companies, local authorities and not for profit organisations.
Having carried out some online research Phil considered the possibility of becoming a Non-Executive Director and in January 2018 he joined NonExecutiveDirectors.com. However, after having an in-depth conversation with an In Touch Networks advisor he decided that consultancy work may be more suited to his abilities and decided to join TheConsultantHub.com.
Having only joined the TheConsultantHub.com at the beginning of the year, Phil has already taken great strides both as a Consultant and as a network member. He has been extremely proactive by completing his profile, adding his professional image and attending our first The Consultant Hub event of the year down in London, ‘Becoming a Consultant: Where to Begin.’
Commenting on the event, Phil said: “I found the session really useful, I learnt a lot from Niall (speaker) as he suggested a lot of things that I’d not considered and advised on how to put them into practice. I realised it was a case of just doing. The very next day I went for an interview for a position that I applied for via the network and it went so well that I was awarded the contract.”
The role that Phil acquired via TheConsultantHub.com is with an investment company called OAGI (Optimum Asset Growth Investments) as an Asset Investment Consultant. He also has another role in the pipeline thanks to the network and is proactively contacting charities to outline how he can help resolve operational and security issues, which is particularly relevant in the light of recent news.
When asked about the application process on the network, Phil said: “Applying for roles on the network is very straightforward. Most days I’ll access the jobs board and look for suitable roles, if there’s one that attracts my attention then I’ll apply with my CV within a matter of minutes.”
In addition to attending one of our recent events, Phil has also enrolled on to our acclaimed webinar-based development programme, Ahead of the Curve.
Phil comments: “I’ve only just started the programme but even after just the first session I’ve learnt skills to put into practice and know that it will be an enjoyable way for me to develop and network. I’ve also worked my way through some of the free training videos available on the portal and they’ve been very informative. I plan to continue engaging with the Ahead of the Curve programme, utilising the training and continue prospecting to ensure I secure some contracts. Like any Consultant, getting contracts is my main focus.”
